News2004/02/23 Three questions to Bruno Berge, Founder and President of VariopticWhat are the main benefits of the electro-wetting technology ? Bruno Berge : The asset of our technology compared to other solutions developed by competition comes from the absence of any moving part : the lenses only need water and oil ! This real innovation patented in 1997, two years only after the first prototypes, results in more reliable products. Other benefits for our customers include low cost of manufacturing, fast focus adjustment and low energy consumption. Who are your customers and your prospects ? BB : Today, telephones manufacturers are highly interested in our technology because mobiles include more and more often digital cameras. As manufacturers are faced with a high cost pressure, they often choose poor quality camera which do not include any capability such as auto-focus. Varioptic is able to manufacture for them high quality products with this functionality. But we can also bring solutions to the medical field which needs miniature dimensions devices used for example during endoscopy examination. We also have other targets such as high resolution cameras, bar code readers, or biometry. What's the next step for Varioptic ? BB : To manufacture our products and to be able to increasingly meet our customers' requirements, essentially in the mobile sector today, we have planned to hire around 50 people in 2004. Half of them are engineers, researchers to work in our laboratories but we also need technicians to work on the assembly lines. Our business model includes both actual manufacturing and technology licensing to reach the high demand on the mobile market. |
