Bruno Berge : Founder, President
Dr. Berge serves as President and CTO of Varioptic. He is responsible for overseeing R&D and collaborates with Mr. Paillard in setting the strategic direction of the Company. His research continues to generate intellectual property for Varioptic, and his refinements and variations on the liquid lens position it as the appropriate solution in a broad range of industrial and consumer applications.
Dr. Berge received his Ph.D in physics from the University of Grenoble , and did two years of post-doctoral research at the University of Chicago , under the leadership of Dr. Albert Libchabert, renowned for his achievements in Chaos Theory.
Etienne Paillard: CEO
Since its foundation in 2002, Etienne Paillard is the CEO of Varioptic S.A, the company that invented the liquid lens .
Prior joining Varioptic, Etienne Paillard held a series of responsible positions at Tekelec Airtronics, culminating in CEO of Temex, an 800 person subsidiary of the electronics component manufacturer.
Etienne Paillard started his career holding various positions at Thomson (now Thalès), Corning , and Texas Instrument. He brings to Varioptic an extensive experience of big corporations and enable the company to avoid mistakes normally done by start-ups.
A native of France, Etienne earned a degree in engineering and an MBA from INSEAD .
Jean-Christophe Robert : CTO
Jean-Christophe Robert
brings to Varioptic over twenty years’ experience in the imaging business.
Before joining us Jean-Christophe was head of Research and Development
at Kodak Industrie. His revitalization of innovation policy there prompted
a comprehensive shift in the company’s research portfolio away from conventional
photography to digital projects.
On graduating as an engineer from the Paris Higher School of Physics
and Industrial Chemistry (ESPCI), Jean-Christophe joined the Kodak group
in 1983 as head of video R&D. He then led research programmes into
new optical materials, before being appointed to the Eastman Kodak Company’s
research unit in the USA. He went on to head the Photographic Research
Laboratory, prior to becoming Director of Research and Development.
Bernard Reymann, CFO
Mr. Reymann has 19 years of financial experience, holding a series of progressively responsible positions in electronics and food companies. Prior joining Varioptic, Bernard was CFO at Temex, an electronic components firm. In addition to his role, he was a member of the company's board.
Mr. Reymann holds a Diplome d'Ingenieur Commercial IES, with a specialization in audit and financial control, and has advanced financial training from IHFI (Institut de Haute Finance) and DECF.
John Barber, VP Business Development
John brings a wide range of senior management, and telecommunications experience, joining Varioptic from TTPCommunications, (a "virtual" mobile phone developer and supplier), where he served as Managing Director of the company's Terminals Business. Prior to TTPC, Barber was Chief Commercial Officer at Cambridge Positioning Systems, where he led the company's commercial development from its conception, to become the world's leading provider of E-OTD location technology for mobile network equipment and handset vendors.
Barber has worked at Nokia, as deputy MD of the UK network business. He also brings business development experience from Cable & Wireless, management consulting experience from Deloitte & Touche, and engineering experience from Rolls Royce.
John is also a former pilot in the Royal Air Force.

Howard Ford , Chairman of the Board
Howard Ford brings to Varioptic an outstanding business track record and extensive experience across several industries. Currently non-executive Chairman of Servista Ltd., Howard started his c areer at IBM Europe where he held several positions, including General Manager of IBM's European PC business before joining BT/Cellnet (now O2), a UK-based mobile phone operator as Chief Executive.
From 1997, Howard Ford served at Equant as President for Europe, Middle East and Africa , responsible for Global Sales, Marketing and Professional & Consulting Services, becoming Managing Director in 2002 In April 2005 he retired from the Board of Equant.
Howard served on the board of Radianz, a joint venture between Reuters and Equant until it was sold to BT in 2004, and on the board of QA Training and as the Chairman of the Thames Valley TEC (Training and Enterprise Council), which managed government funds of approx £30m pa for the vocational training of young people in the Thames Valley. He is also Chairman of the Branshaw Foundation, an educational charitable trust.
A native of the UK , Howard earned a BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering from Christ's College, Cambridge . Luc O. Bauer Ph.D
Dr. Bauer has served for more than 30 years in various executive positions in several high technology companies, in the US, and Europe, often as a founder, member of the board, president. Among those were Hana Microdisplay Technology, SVISION, nCHIP, Integrated Device Technology, and Eurosil/Intersil. Starting with an engineering education in Switzerland, BS, Physics, Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, and in the US, M.S., Ph.D., Engineering Science, Caltech, Pasadena, his early responsibilities were technical in nature to cover later all aspects of high technology business: manufacturing, finance, marketing/sales, and general management.
Since returning in Europe in December 2001, he became board member and mentor to a number of local high technology companies with focus in microelectronics, display, and lately micro- and nano-technologies with and without biotechnology aspects, working on the development of infrastructures necessary for their successful developments. This means working with local authorities, universities, and the financial community, especially venture capitalist groups and banks. Among those companies, in Switzerland : Seyonic, Microsens Products, Space-X, Innovative Silicon Solutions, Zeptosens, and lately Varioptic in Lyon , France . He is also board member of Neode, the new Canton of Neuchatel Science and Technology Park .
Alain Blancquart
Mr. Blancquart has over 30 years of experience in the IT industry. He was the founder of several successful companies, including Micropro, Europe (the Wordstar company) and Borland International, Europe .
He is now the CEO of Esmertec, the leading company in the field of Java based software for mobile telephones. Prior to joining Esmertec, he served as Vice President and General Manager at Openwave and at Global Knowledge, the world's largest independent IT training company. Alain Blancquart holds a B.S in Electronic Engineering from Ecole Centrale Electronique of Paris ( France ).
Alain Rodermann
Mr. Rodermann is a partner at Sofinnova, where he focuses on investment in information technology. He started with Sofinnova Partners in April 1999. He graduated from Supélec in electrical engineering and holds an MBA from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris . Alain began his career in 1990 with IB2 Technologies (a Bouygues/IBM joint venture). From 1991 to 1997, he headed a team dedicated to making command and intelligence systems at Alcatel Telecom. In 1997, he started with Innovacom (France Telecom's venture capital division) as investment manager where he made seed investments and sat on the boards of Netvalue and Lastminute.com which went public. With Sofinnova Partners, he has notably invested in Atomz, Servista, Tak'Asic and Varioptic.
Dirk Kanngiesser
Dirk Kanngiesser is a founder and Managing Partner of PolyTechnos. He has over 13 years of venture capital experience in Europe . Previously, he worked for eight years as a venture capitalist for Baring Private Equity Partners (BPEP). As a Senior Partner in Europe , he was responsible for German operations and overlooked high-technology investments in German-speaking countries. Prior to joining BPEP, he served in Brand Management for Procter & Gamble and Project Engineering at Siemens for a nuclear power project.
Dirk is a board member of a number of high-tech companies. He has also served on the board of venture capital funds such as Capricorn Venture Partners and the EuroMerchant Balkan Fund. Dirk is a member of the EVCA High Tech Committee.
Dirk received his degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany . He received his MBA from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor .
