Red Herring Names Varioptic to its Short-list of Finalists for The Red Herring 100 Europe Awards

Annual Red Herring Europe to be awarded at the
Red Venture Market Europe 2005 Conference, April 12-14 in London

The Red Herring today announced that Varioptic has been selected as one of the 200 finalists for the Red Herring 100 Europe award program, from a list of more than 800 candidates. The 100 winners will be unveiled at the Venture Market Europe 2005 conference, April 12-14, 2005 in London. Dedicated to celebrating the most innovative privately-held European companies, this three-day conference will feature keynote speeches, lively dialogue and presentations by the CEOs of the Red Herring 100 Europe private companies.

The technology, financing, marketing, sales, service, leadership, and business strategies of the 200 finalists named today are currently being evaluated by the Red Herring editorial team. The top 100 companies that embody innovation, technology, and strategy will be selected to the final list.

“The quantity and depth of submissions we’ve received for the Red Herring 100 Europe list shows that imagination and creativity are alive and well in the global world of technology,” said Joel Dreyfuss, Editor-in-Chief of Red Herring. We’ve placed Varioptic on our list because the company’s liquid lens has the potential to truly revolutionize the camera phone market.”

“Being named to the Red Herring short list is the latest in a series of accolades that we’ve received since unveiling our auto-focus, and zoom liquid lenses,” said Etienne Paillard, CEO of Varioptic. “The reaction that our liquid lens has received from customers, partners, prospects, and the press has been truly astonishing, and we’re thrilled to be recognized by the Red Herring.”

Varioptic is the inventor of the liquid lens – which acts similarly to the human eye, by changing shape, to zoom or focus automatically, without mechanical aid. Varioptic’s patented electrowetting technology uses electricity to alter the shape of two liquid drops, and change the focal length of a small, fast, and durable lens, which requires significantly less battery power than traditional camera-phone optics. Varioptic is currently working with Samsung Electro-Mechanics to provide auto focus liquid lenses for camera phones, which are expected to be commercially available by the fourth quarter of this year. Last month, Varioptic demonstrated the world’s first liquid zoom lens, which combines multiple liquid lenses to address magnification, change focus and control aberrations.
