Takachiho Koheki to start selling Varioptic's Liquid Lenses in Japan

Takachiho Koheki to start selling Varioptic’s Autofocus Liquid Lens in Japan.

Tokyo (Japan) and Lyon (France), 28 March 2007 - Takachiho Koheki, a leading company importing cutting edge products for a wide range of high tech and industrial applications  and Varioptic, the liquid lens company, announced today the signature of a distribution agreement in Japan for their autofocus liquid lens solutions.  Varioptic’s liquid lens (Arctic 320 and Arctic 416) changes shape automatically without mechanical aid. Acting much like the human eye, it uses electricity to change the focus of the lens by altering the border between two drops of liquid. The company’s patented “electrowetting” technology provides some crucial advantages over traditional autofocus solutions in terms of size, cost, speed, durability and power consumption. Today, Auto focus (AF) and Optical zooming functions are using fixed lenses mostly operated by stepping motors, voice coils or piezoelectric devices. However, this fixed lens presents many disadvantages: high power consumption, cost, lack of robustness and includes many external components.  As a result, mobile phone and digital cameras are more likely to break easily hence the need for alternative autofocus solutions with no mechanical parts.   “Varioptic’s liquid lens, which does not include any moving parts, offers some crucial commercial advantages’’said Hideo Toda, President of Takachiho Koheki.  “Varioptic’s liquid lens solutions can be integrated in many applications ranging from barcode scanners, surveillance cameras and automotive camera devices, which we already know well through our association with CMOS image sensors. As a next step, we will focus on mobile phones and digital still camera applications. Our revenue target is Yen 2 billion by 2009’’. “We are delighted to be working with Takachiho Koheki in Japan’’, added Etienne Paillard, CEO of Varioptic. Their unique position in the Japanese market gives us an ideal opportunity to establish Varioptic autofocus products as the solutions of choice for industrial applications’’.
